Earthday at Ponce City Market
April 24, 2022
The first event of the newly chartered Georgia Piedmont chapter of Wild Ones took place April 24th at the Atlanta Ponce City Market’s inaugural Green Market in celebration of Earth Day. Chapter President, Brian Romm, and Vice President & Secretary, Lindsey Roper, were out in the “Yard” spreading the word about Wild Ones and the importance of native plants and landscapes. Vendors- such as our very own Suzy Nicksic’s Organic Garden Company- as well as a multitude of organizations were out promoting green initiatives and everyday practices.
We had the opportunity to engage many folks in discussions concerning the problems with non-native, invasive species, and we were allowed a platform to rave about native plants and why we love them! Having our friends from the Georgia Native Plant Society situated nearby helped create a steady stream of folks who were interested in learning more about native plants and how to use them, while we could also send folks their way for additional resource materials. Environmentally focused folks interested in environmentally beneficial initiatives was the name of the game for the day, and we loved to see it!
In addition to informational handouts, we brought along planters packed full of native plants to demonstrate not only how beautiful the plants of the Piedmont are on their own but also how easy it is to create an island of native species within a small space. Pollinators will flock to the plants that are endemic to their physiographic region, so providing even a pocket of attractive plants for wildlife can contribute to the prosperity and biodiversity within our individual spaces.
We were thrilled to spread the word about what we do and to be a part of such a wonderful Earth Day affair, and we look forward to more events with more of our members in the days to come!
